Meet the Artist

The hands behind Rooted Raven

Loctician. Artist. Creator of Rooted Raven.

I’m Alisia, a loctician and graffiti artist behind Rooted Raven Studio in Dayton, Ohio. My approach to loc care brings those two worlds together: technical craft, creativity, and respect for individuality.

Rooted Raven was created as a private space where clients can receive focused, personalized care without the atmosphere of a crowded salon. Every head of locs is treated as an original piece of living art.

I started my own locs about twenty years ago and taught myself the craft from the inside out before getting certified — and my graffiti tag MISH (short for Mission) is the energy I bring to every head I touch.

Loc Care Education

Healthy locs start with good care

Great loc care doesn’t stop when you leave the studio. Tap a topic for the studio’s take — written from real chair experience.

Washing+
wash every 1–2 weeks with a residue-free shampoo. focus on your scalp and let the suds run down through your locs. use the pads of your fingers against your scalp. rinse thoroughly — leftover product is the enemy.
Drying+
dry completely, every time. squeeze gently, wrap in a microfiber towel, then air dry or sit under a hooded dryer. damp locs left sitting can develop mildew — and you can’t undo that smell.
Moisturizing+
locs need water first, oil second. a light rose water or aloe spray followed by a light oil keeps them supple. go easy — buildup starts with good intentions.
Maintenance rhythm+
see your loctician every 4–8 weeks depending on your hair and your look. more isn’t better! over-maintaining weakens your roots.
What to avoid+
heavy waxes and creamy conditioners are not made for locs. styles pulled so tight to your scalp that it hurts — pain is never part of the process. do not cut fly aways!
Itching+
itching is normal — most clients itch during the first few weeks. use a light scalp oil or braid spray between washes, and pat or massage instead of scratching with your nails. persistent itching with rash, swelling, or burning can mean an allergic reaction — contact me right away.
Braid-In Loc Extension Care+
  • mild tenderness, heaviness, itching, and small tension bumps are normal — use a cool compress if your scalp feels tight, and a scalp relief oil for tenderness.
  • wash every 2–4 weeks with diluted shampoo. focus on your scalp, massage gently with the pads of your fingers, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry. never leave synthetic locs damp — dry them completely before sleeping.
  • satin or silk head wrap every night. rinse after swimming and dry thoroughly. keep high heat, curling irons, flat irons, and open flames away from synthetic hair.
  • contact me if you experience: severe pain lasting several days, excessive swelling or burning, persistent rash, or large areas of hair loss. don’t wait on these.

Good Questions

Before you book

The stuff people always ask. Still have questions? Reach out and we’ll help you find the right next step.

I’m new to locs. Where do I start?+
With a consultation. We’ll talk through your hair texture, your lifestyle, and the look you want — then pick a starter method that actually fits your life, not someone else’s.
How long do appointments take?+
It depends on the service. A maintenance session usually runs a few hours; starter locs and big repair jobs can take most of a day. This is a one-chair studio, so your appointment is unhurried — nobody’s getting rushed out for the next client.
Do I need to book ahead?+
Yes — the studio runs by appointment only, and there’s one chair. No walk-ins. Book online through GlossGenius and your spot is yours.
What products do you use?+
Professional, loc-safe products only — and as a licensed pro, Alisia has access to pro-only lines you won’t find on a drugstore shelf. No heavy waxes, no buildup traps.
Can you save a broken or thinning loc?+
Often, yes. Thinning locs can be reinforced and broken ones reattached — which means you don’t have to lose the length you spent years growing. Bring it to a consultation and we’ll see what’s possible.
